The first cancer diagnosis came just after her 33rd birthday. A small spot on her tongue had been irritated for several months - she was shocked when the results came back positive for cancer. Four years later, another area of irritation in her mouth turned out to be severe dysplasia. Two years after that, yet another spot became cancerous. By this point, this surgery felt almost routine. No one knew why she got tongue cancer. Laura had never smoked a cigarette and wasn’t a heavy drinker. The tumor was not HPV-positive. She was young and female. It was the next time, during the COVID lockdowns, that another spot appeared on her tongue. Her surgery took place in an eerily empty hospital, as only the most serious cases were allowed to proceed. Over this past decade of ups and downs, Laura experienced the critical importance of patients and their caregivers advocating for their care. | | | | | | INTRODUCING H&N CONNECT We're excited to announce that our new caregiver education series launches in May. This new program will provide insight from leading medical experts on a variety of issues in a supportive community for caregivers of head and neck cancer patients and survivors. Weekly meetings will be held over 12 weeks, which will explore a variety of caregiver-related topics. Our first class starts in May and will only be available to caregivers living in the Sacramento, CA, area. If you're a caregiver to a HNC patient and would like to participate in our inaugural class, please email us! | | | | | | | | | SAVE THE DATE Make plans to join us for April's "Ask the Expert." The topic is Physical Therapy Before & After Head and Neck Cancer Treatment. Our expert will be Jacklyn Berry, PT, DPT, WCS, CLT. She's a Senior Physical Therapist and Certified Lymphedema Therapist with UPMC Rehabilitation Institute - Moon University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. This event will be held April 21-25 on our Head & Neck Cancer online support community on Inspire. You must sign up for a free account if you're new to our Inspire forum. You can sign up anytime, but you won't be able to ask your questions until closer to the event. | | | | | | SAVE THE DATE - SYMPOSIUM We don't have many details we're able to share (yet), but mark your calendars for October 4, 2025 and make plans to join us in sunny (hopefully) Los Angeles for our annual Head and Neck Cancer Symposium. As in previous years, you may choose to attend virtually or in-person. The Symposium is free for head and neck cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, and their loved ones. We hope to see you there! | | | | | If you're a frequent visitor to our website, you might have noticed that we've quietly launched a re-design of the site. It's brand new, and we still have work to do on it, but we wanted to ask for your patience and understanding if you come across broken links or pages that you might have bookmarked that don't exist anymore. We are aware of several bugs that we're working on fixing, but if you are experiencing a problem with our site, please email us and let us know. We'll talk more about our new website next month! | | | | | | | April 10th - Gulp Fiction: Busting Swallow Myths with Dr. Ianessa Humbert | | Join the National Foundation of Swallowing Disorders for their free webinar, Gulp Fiction. This webinar takes on some of the most common myths and misconceptions about swallowing and swallowing disorders. Through evidence-based insights and real-world examples, Dr. Humbert will challenge outdated beliefs, clarify misunderstandings, and empower attendees with accurate knowledge in the field of deglutology. | | | | | Congratulations to Alliance Ambassador Eva Grayzel.
