4TH ANNUAL HEAD AND NECK CANCER SUVIVORSHIP SYMPOSIUM

The Head and Neck Cancer Alliance, in partnership with the American Head & Neck Society, will be hosting its Fourth Annual Head and Neck Cancer Survivorship Symposium on Saturday, October 7th.

We are pleased to inform you that the Survivorship Symposium will be offered both virtually, and for the first time, in-person, so that as many patients, survivors, and caregivers can benefit from the panelists’ medical expertise as well as the survivor’s lived-experience.

The in-person Survivorship Symposium will be held in Indianapolis, at the Homewood Suites by Hilton Indianapolis Canal, IUPUI  from 9 am – 4:30 pm.  Both the virtual and in-person are offered FREE to patients, survivors, caregivers, and medical professionals.

The 2023 AHNS/HNCA Survivorship Symposium program features many of the leading head and neck cancer oncological and supportive care experts and all sessions will include a survivor to share his/her personal head and neck cancer journey

MEET OUR AMBASSADORS:
Itzhak Brook, MD MSC

Dr. Brook is a physician who specializes in pediatrics and infectious diseases, and a head and neck cancer survivor. Initially diagnosed with throat cancer in 2006, regrettably, his cancer recurred after initial treatments, and his larynx had to be removed.

Becoming a laryngectomee was a trying experience for Dr. Brook, as it affected his most fundamental functions: speaking, breathing, and eating.

He has authored the books, My Voice, a Physician’s Personal Experience with Throat Cancer and The Laryngectomee Guide. The Guide has been translated into over 15 languages and is available free of charge.

As a head and neck cancer survivor and a laryngectomee, Dr. Brook feels great satisfaction that his personal experience enables him to help other survivors to speak again and lead a full and satisfying life

• Have not had surgery for their cancer
• Have been treated with cisplatin chemotherapy and radiotherapy
• Are HPV negative (if known)
• Have tumors located in the oropharynx, hypopharynx, or larynx
• Cancer has not progressed (the cancer has not come back after treatment)
Caregivers:
• Care for a locally advanced head & neck cancer patient with the above criteria

NEWS AND SHORTS

Earlier in the month HNCA staff attended the American Society of Clinical Oncology's annual conference in Chicago.  They had an opportunity to network with many clinicians and sponsors during the trip.

Pictured are HNCA's Amanda Hollinger (Executive Director), Dr. Mike Moore (Board President), and Nanci Bonfield (Director of Development).

Thank you to the Christine Tatum and the Smash Cancer Tennis Tournament Team for their 14th annual tennis tournament fundraiser!  The event was a huge success and proceeds go to fund our gas card program.

Event organizer Christine Tatum is pictured in the middle and HNCA's Nanci Bonfield (Director of Development) is in the red shirt.

Thank you to Justin Shell (pictured on the left) and his family for hosting a ping pong tournament fundraiser in honor of his Papa's (pictured on the right) battle with salivary gland cancer. The funds he raised were donated to the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance.
