JANUARY WEBINAR

Parenting Through A Head & Neck Cancer Diagnosis, Treatment, and into Survivorship
January 22, 2024
7:00-8:00 pm ET

Parenting through a cancer journey impacts the whole family and can profoundly affect children. Parenting Through A Head and Neck Cancer Diagnosis, Treatment and into Survivorship webinar will provide guidance on how to have simple and open communication with children.

You will learn from a Child Life Specialist and three parents on how to maintain a sense of connection and provide opportunities for sharing and self-expression to help your child throughout this experience. Children are resilient and can learn to cope with challenging situations when provided with individualized support.

MEET OUR AMBASSADORS:
STEPHAN CASSIDY
Veteran and Survivor of Stage IV Tongue Cancer; Lutz, FL

In the Spring of 2016, Stephan, age 53, was diagnosed with Stage IV tongue cancer, which had spread locally to two lymph nodes on one side of his neck. It took several months to diagnose his original cancer. The only warning sign Stephan had was a persistent, though intermittent, sore throat.

He underwent seven weeks of daily radiation, with several cycles of chemotherapy. Three months later, a PET scan indicated he was cancer free.

About a year after his original diagnosis, Stephan was playing golf and felt a minor twinge in his back. Stephan expressed his concerns to his doctor that something again didn’t feel right, just like the original throat cancer didn’t feel right. He shared that he thought it might be cancer.

The next night, he underwent the scan and received a call the following morning with the news that he had a ‘destructive soft tissue mass’ on his rib, lung, and liver.

NEWS AND SHORTS

The 2024 Us vs HPV webinar series will take place from January 22-26. The webinars are intended for healthcare providers, parents, patients, community leaders, women’s health advocates, students, young leaders and the general public. People of all genders can benefit from these talks. A live panel discussion will be hosted at the end of each session to answer audience questions. The webinar on Thursday, January 25th, features Jason Mendelsohn, one of our board members and a head and neck cancer survivor! Find out more and register for all the webinars here.

If you're interested in learning more about breathwork meditation (or already do it), you're invited to learn more about a research study that looks at the impacts of an evidence-based breathwork meditation program on the quality of life for individuals/survivors with head-and-neck cancer (with or without dysphagia) and their caregivers.

Participants will learn about this in an online group, led by a certified instructor. Anyone in North America is welcome to participate in this study.
Email Ting-fen Lin for details.

Smash Cancer, a long-running tennis tournament benefiting the Alliance, recently received two prestigious awards from the United States Tennis Association: North Carolina Tournament of the Year and the Southern Section Adult Tournament of the Year.

In 14 years, the tournament has raised over $100,000 for the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance, every penny of which has been used directly for patient needs.
