Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week Begins April 3!

Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week is April 3 - 9! HNCA is planning a week full of information and activities to help raise awareness and educate the public on the symptoms and risk factors. This year, we are also featuring activities and information for patients and survivors as well!
  • Monday, April 4: Adolescent Immunization Action Week – On this day, we will focus on HPV as a cause of head and neck cancer, share educational resources about the link between HPV and head and neck cancer, and educate on the importance of HPV vaccination for preteens and teens.
  • Tuesday, April 5: Symptoms and Early Detection – Today we focus on the symptoms of head and neck cancer and why they are often overlooked. We will promoted self-examination for symptoms of head and neck cancer via print, online, and video resources.
  • Wednesday, April 6: Oral Mucositis Awareness Day – Today, we will share educational resources on risk factors to help the public learn what they can do to reduce their risk of developing head and neck cancer. In recognition of Oral Mucositis Awareness Day, we will also share educational resources for patients on managing this significant side effect of head and neck cancer treatment.
  • Thursday, April 7: Survivorship – Today, we focus on survivorship! Get a glimpse into life as a survivor of head and neck cancer and the challenges they face. We also focus again on the importance of early detection for improving patient outcomes and the value of self-exam. To help support newly diagnosed patients on their road to recovery and survivorship, HNCA will also present Head and Neck Cancer: What to Expect During the First Year After Diagnosis,  a free webinar that features medical experts and survivors who will share the realities of diagnosis, treatment, and the first months of recovery. You will come away with an understanding of what to expect as you navigate through your cancer diagnosis and treatment.
  • Friday, April 8: Wellness  Today’s focus is on maintaining wellness. We will focus on self-examination, vaccination, and eliminating risk factors. We will also offer resources for patients and survivors to help them with their overall wellness. Our activities today will feature Yoga Practice, a free webinar on yoga for head and neck cancer patients and survivors – but it is also beneficial for the general public!

As always, HNCA, in partnership with our medical and dental community, is offering free cancer screenings. To see if there is a screening event in your community, click here.

Is Your Medical or Dental Clinic Still Interested in Hosting a Screening?  It's Not Too Late!

Registration is now open for medical and dental partners interested in hosting a screening event in 2022. We understand many sites may have challenges with hosting a screening event due to COVID-19 restrictions, so we are encouraging sites to:

  • Work with their respective institutions’ public health teams to determine the appropriate timing and venue to optimize the safety of your head and neck cancer screening event.
  • Plan for a screening in the latter part of 2022 when conditions are better. HNCA is pleased to offer the same educational and promotional support—free of charge—for all screenings offered in 2022.
  • Share this email with dental offices in your local community, who are currently seeing patients, and can serve as the first line of defense in detecting head and neck cancer.

The Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness program is generously supported by grants from

HNCA is Looking for Spanish Speaking Survivor Mentors

HNCA partners with Imerman Angels (IA) to provide peer-to-peer support for the head and neck cancer community. We share the belief that no one should face cancer alone. Through this partnership, we match mentors who share similar cancer journeys with patients, survivors, and caregivers to provide one-on-one emotional support and compassion.

While we recognize that each cancer and life situation is unique, our goal is to connect patients, survivors and caregivers with “Mentor Angels” who’ve faced a similar experience. Mentor Angels give cancer fighters and caregivers the chance to ask personal questions and receive support from a peer who has been down the same road before.

At this time, we are in need of Spanish speaking mentors. If you are fully fluent in Spanish and interested in being a mentor, please learn more and sign up today!

As a lymphedema therapist, Allison learned what her patients were going through after she was diagnosed with head and neck cancer. Tactile Medical's Flexitouch helps her get back to doing what she loves to do.
