HOLIDAY WISHES AND A LOOK BACK AT 2023

As 2023 comes to an end, we wanted to highlight what Head & Neck Cancer Alliance has accomplished this year!

  • Move-A-Thon - We held our first national fundraiser in April and raised more than $130,000.  Rob Paulson, voice actor and head and neck cancer survivor, was our spokesperson, and we had 453 participants and 57 teams helping to raise funds and awareness!  We look forward to having you join us for the 2024 Move-A-Thon (details coming soon)!

  • We celebrated the 25th anniversary of Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week (in April) and partnered with hundreds of healthcare workers to provide free head and neck cancer screenings across the world.

  • We held our first in-person Head & Neck Cancer Symposium in Indianapolis.  We had over 100 people attend in person and more than 500 attend virtually.

  • We welcomed nine new Ambassadors and three new board members to the Head & Neck Cancer Alliance family.

  • We issued nearly 700 gas cards to assist diagnosed head and neck cancer patients with travel costs. Please note, this program is currently closed and will reopen next year.

  • Our Peer-to-Peer mentoring program matched 94 people to mentors, and we added 29 new survivors and caregivers to the program to act as mentors.

  • Our educational webinars had nearly 600 attendees over the year with more than 3,000 video views (these numbers do not include Symposium).

  • Our online Head & Neck Cancer Inspire forum averaged 84 new members each month.

We look forward to continued growth in 2024 and encourage you to keep an eye out for our January newsletter, which will outline some of our plans for the new year (we have some big, exciting plans for the year)!

Parenting through a cancer journey impacts the whole family and can profoundly affect children. This webinar will guide parents on how to have simple and open communication with children.

You will learn from a Child Life Specialist and three parents on how to maintain a sense of connection and provide opportunities for sharing and self-expression to help your child throughout this experience. Children are resilient and can learn to cope with challenging situations when provided with individualized support.

More information and a registration link will be available in early January 2024

Our December "Ask the Expert" is now over, but if you missed it earlier this month, don't worry!

All of the laryngectomy related discussion is still available to read over on the Head & Neck Cancer Inspire forum.

You can catch up on any discussion you missed by clicking here.

MEET OUR AMBASSADORS:
BILL CASON
Husband, Proud Father of Three, Commercial Airline Pilot, and Survivor of HPV-Attributed Tongue Cancer;
Flower Mound, TX

Bill’s cancer journey started as a seemingly very healthy 50-year-old male, happily married and with three wonderful children. One night while in his kitchen enjoying some family time, he felt a solid lump on the right side of his neck.

Since Bill’s father died of pancreatic cancer, he immediately went to see his family physician the next day. His physician felt it was probably nothing, maybe just an infection.

One area that Bill regrets is that from that initial response, he was slower than he should have been in getting further testing.

Between appointment availability of the specialists and Bill’s busy work schedule, by the time he made it to an ENT it was around six weeks after his initial doctor’s visit.  The ENT performed a scope of his throat and informed Bill that he suspected cancer on the right base of his tongue, and the cancer had probably spread to his lymph nodes.

“This was an incredible shock, having no symptoms and being very active,” explained Bill.  “With the help of my family doctor, I immediately scheduled an appointment at an excellent teaching hospital in our area, the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.”

Lock arms with us to celebrate survivors, give hope to those presently in treatment, and honor those that we have lost. We need your help to increase our mission to advance prevention, detection, treatment, and rehabilitation of oral, head and neck cancer through public awareness, research, advocacy, and survivorship.
