SEPTEMBER WEBINAR

DENTAL CARE BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER HNC TREATMENT | SEPTEMBER 23, 7PM ET

Oral health plays a vital role in the treatment and recovery journey for people affected by head and neck cancer. Cancer treatments such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy can lead to a variety of dental and oral health challenges, including dry mouth, tooth decay, difficulty eating, jaw stiffness, and changes in overall oral function.

Join us for an informative discussion featuring a dentist, dental hygienist, and head and neck cancer survivor who will share expert guidance and personal experiences. The panel will discuss the importance of dental care before, during, and after treatment, strategies for preventing and managing common oral complications, and practical tips for maintaining long-term oral health and quality of life.

Whether you are newly diagnosed, currently undergoing treatment, or years into survivorship, this webinar will provide valuable information and resources to help you navigate the dental challenges that can accompany head and neck cancer.

MEET OUR AMBASSADORS

Melissa Vernon

Owner, Family Construction Business | Survivor of Salivary Gland Cancer

In 2020, at just 42 years old, Melissa was diagnosed with a rare salivary gland cancer after discovering a lump near her left ear. With no history of tobacco or alcohol use, the diagnosis came as a shock. Persistent follow-up from her ENT ultimately led to answers and a treatment plan that included surgery and 30 rounds of radiation.

At the same time, Melissa and her husband were raising four children and building a new construction business without health insurance. The financial stress of treatment became another major part of her cancer journey. Through surgery, radiation, and support from her loved ones, Melissa reached remission.

Today, Melissa looks back on cancer as an experience that changed how she approaches life. It taught her to trust her instincts, appreciate her time, focus on her health, and find ways to serve others. By sharing her story, she hopes to encourage others facing a diagnosis and remind them that cancer can also lead to a renewed sense of purpose.

Bonnie Hansen has some good news to share! After being diagnosed with stage I tonsil cancer in January 2026, she completed seven weeks of radiation treatment with the support of a caring radiation therapy team. While recovery has brought challenges with eating, taste, dry mouth, and maintaining her weight, Bonnie’s three-month post-treatment CT and PET scans showed that the radiation did its job. More recently, her NavDx blood work was negative for HPV-related tumor DNA, adding another encouraging milestone to her recovery. She’ll continue to be closely monitored and is looking forward to seeing what improvements the next year brings.

If you would like to reach out to Bonnie or offer encouraging words, please send your message to [email protected], and we'll forward the email to her.

A team of head and neck cancer physicians at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center is combining minimally invasive robotic surgery with a blood test that detects tiny amounts of cancer-related DNA; the team hopes to identify patients who can safely avoid radiation therapy after surgery without increasing their risk of the cancer returning.

  • ARTICLE: Get Growing
RESEARCH SHOWS GARDENING can help people undergoing cancer treatment ease their anxiety, increase how much produce they eat and improve their quality of life. But not everyone has access to a patch of soil. A study suggests hydroponic gardening—which brings the growing process indoors—provides similar benefits.

Make Your Voice Heard: Share Your Experience with Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Your experience with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) matters.

Johnson & Johnson has partnered with The Harris Poll to better understand the real-world experiences of people affected by HNSCC. This survey aims to capture the physical, emotional, and practical challenges that can come with diagnosis, treatment, and disease progression, and to highlight the need for solutions that better reflect what matters most to patients and caregivers.

If you are eligible and interested, please take the survey here.

As a thank you, participants will receive an early look at the survey findings before they are shared more broadly, helping ensure your voice is reflected in how these insights are brought to light.
