HOPE & HEALING: ADDRESSING EMOTIONAL NEEDS DURING THE HNC JOURNEY

This webinar explores the crucial connection between head and neck cancer and mental health. A diagnosis of head and neck cancer can have a profound impact not only on physical well-being but also on emotional and psychological health. Our experts will address the emotional challenges faced by patients, caregivers, and survivors, offering practical strategies for coping and maintaining mental wellness throughout the journey.

MEET OUR AMBASSADORS

ED KING

Husband, Father, Business Man | Survivor of Stage IV Tongue and Neck Cancer, HPV Negative

In August 2014, Ed was diagnosed with squamous cell tongue cancer after he noticed a bump on the tip of his tongue that didn’t go away.  He contacted an ENT surgeon and, after a PET scan, was diagnosed with cancer on the tip of his tongue and in several locations in his neck.

After his tongue surgery, the treatment plan was to remove the affected lymph nodes and to begin daily radiation therapy after a short healing process.

Based on advice he received from a doctor (who was also a HNC survivor), Ed requested a feeding tube be inserted, and thereby avoided the problems of malnutrition and dehydration.

His radiation treatments ended up causing bone necrosis in his left lower jaw. After some time, when all of Ed’s follow-up tests continued to be clear, he underwent a procedure to have several pieces of bone extracted from his lower left jaw, and he spent 3 to 4 hours a day for 40 days in a hyperbaric chamber.

Because of his experiences and the cancer patients he meets locally, Ed decided to start a head and neck cancer support group - which has been meeting monthly for many years now!

NEWS & SHORTS

Oncology Nursing Society Congress - Denver

Alliance Patient Navigator Melissa Cooke attended the ONS Congress last week in Denver.  The event is the largest and most comprehensive conference dedicated to oncology nurses. It was wonderful to be able to connect with so many head and neck cancer nurses.

National HPV Conference - Indianapolis

Alliance board member, survivor, and ambassador Jason Mendelsohn and Alliance Director of Programs Eileen Sexton are attending the National HPV Conference this week.  Jason is speaking at the conference (more on that next month), and helping us man our booth and spread awareness about HPV and our programs.

SAVE THE DATE  - SYMPOSIUM

We don't have many details we're able to share (yet), but mark your calendars for October 4, 2025 and make plans to join us in sunny (hopefully) Los Angeles for our annual Head and Neck Cancer Symposium.

As in previous years, you may choose to attend virtually or in-person. The Symposium is free for head and neck cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, and their loved ones.

We hope to see you there in person!

If you're a frequent visitor to our website, you might have noticed that we've quietly launched a re-design of the site. It's brand new, and we still have work to do on it, but we wanted to ask for your patience and understanding if you come across broken links or pages that you might have bookmarked that don't exist anymore.  We are aware of several bugs that we're working on fixing, but if you are experiencing a problem with our site, please email us and let us know.

We'll talk more about our new website next month!
